Home invasion leaves one man dead, sparks police chase on NSW North Coast

A man is in custody following a deadly home invasion in the NSW Northern Rivers region.

Emergency services were called to a home on Ballanda Crescent at Iluka about 4.30pm yesterday.

Police said an intruder forced his way into the home and allegedly attacked the resident with a knife.

Paramedics attempted to revive the victim, but he died at the scene.

The suspect fled, with police locating a man driving a 4WD along the Pacific Highway a short time later.

When the man failed to stop a pursuit commenced from Iluka to Woodburn.

The chase, which spanned over 50km/h, came to an end after police deployed road spikes.

A 58-year-old man was arrested an taken to Lismore Police Station.

At this stage, no charges have been laid.

Inquiries are continuing.
