Surfer twice bitten by shark chasing seal off Kangaroo Island

A surfer who survived a shark attack off South Australia's Kangaroo Island drove himself to hospital after being bitten.

Footage believed to be of the attack about 1.30pm yesterday captures the moment chaos unfolded near a popular surf break, known as The Sewer, at D'Estrees Bay.

According to Shark Watch SA, a community shark monitoring site, the predator, believed to be a bronze whaler, was chasing a seal in the lead-up to the incident.

It was reported the seal used the surfer as a decoy before the man was bitten.

The surfer, aged in his 50s, was bitten twice and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Bronze whaler sharks can grow to a maximum weight of 300kg and up to 3.3m in length.

In December 2020, a young surfer was left with serious leg injuries when he was attacked by a great white shark at the same beach.
